Broad Field Social Studies in History

· History Major

Requirements and recommendations:
A minimum of 33 semester credits, which must be broadly distributed among a series of historical fields. At least 18 semester credits in History must be acquired through courses numbered 300 or above. POLS 150, SOCI 101, ECON 235, and GEOG 102 or ANTH 112 are also recommended to majors. A foreign language is recommended and is required for the BA degree.

History Codes

History majors must include coursework from at least seven of nine coded areas. Each catalog description of history courses ncludes a code number indicative of which requirements are met by that course: Code 1-United States History; Code 2-European/World History; Code 3Wisconsin/Regional History; Code 4-African History; Code 5-Latin American History; Code 6Asian History; Code 7-Middle Eastern History; Code 8-Gender History/Family History; Code 9Historiography and Methodology.

Capstone Experience

Each History major is required to complete a Capstone Experience. HIST 496 Historical Research Methods is required of all majors and should normally be taken in the Fall of the senior year. HIST 496 is the prerequisite for HIST 497 Senior Thesis, which is optional for those pursuing teaching certification, and required of those not pursuing certification. HIST 497 should normally be taken in the spring of the senior year.

· Broad Field Social Studies in History

Broad Field Social Sciences is a comprehensive liberal arts major. Students intending to pursue careers in secondary education must also complete a series of Wisconsin Teacher Certification requirements. Contact the Teacher Education Department for details.

The Broad Field Social Studies in History program is inter-disciplinary and includes course work in Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. Certification to teach fusion courses in the social sciences will be granted upon completion of the program below. Fusion courses are defined as those that integrate several social studies disciplines and require composite preparation in social studies like Civics, Social Problems, American Problems, Area Studies, Vital Issues, etc.

The Broad Field Social Studies Major in History requires a minimum of 54 semester credits to be fulfilled in the following fashion:

1. Completion of the following set of core courses (36 credits):
ECON 235 and BUS 110 6 credits
PSYC 101 and any other PSYC course 6 credits
GEOG 100 and 102 6 credits
HIST 110 and 111/or 160 and 161/or251 and 252/ or 219 and 220 6 credits
POLS 150 and 330 6 credits
SOCI 101 and ANTH 112 6 credits

2. Completion of either:

A. A major in History. (Completion of the Broad Field major in his manner will require a student to take more than the 54 semester credit minimum required of the Broad Field major.) Broad Field core courses may, where appropriate, be applied oward the major.or
B. A minor in History. Broad Field core courses may, where appropriate, be applied toward the minor.
3. Additional elective credits, if necessary, in any of the disciplines within the Broad Field major other than the field of the teaching major or minor.

· History Minor

A minimum of 21 credits, distributed among five of the nine history codes. At least nine credits must be at the 300 level or above.

· Students with History Certification  in Secondary Education

To satisfy teacher certification requirements in Wisconsin, students must complete,As majors:

1. HIST 339 Methods of Teaching Social Studies in the Secondary Schools.
2. Complete three credits in seven of nine history fields which must include:

Code 1-United States;
Code 2-Europe/World History by taking HIST 110 and HIST 111;
Code 3-Wisconsin/Regional and
Code 9-Historiography and Methodology by taking HIST 496.
Achieve competencies in the areas Conservation of Natural Resources; Marketing and Consumer Cooperatives; and Human Relations through a variety of coursework as indicated in the catalog course descriptions.

And, as minors:

1. HIST 339 Methods of Teaching Social Studies in the Secondary Schools.
2. Complete three credits in each of five of the nine fields of history including:

Code-1 U.S. History;
Code 2-Europe/World by taking HIST 110 and HIST 111;
Code 9-Historiography by taking HIST 496.
