Welcome to UW-Superior. The 2002-2004 General Catalog describes the university's undergraduate and graduate academic programs, courses and procedures. It provides the information you need to apply for admission, financial aid and campus housing, pay tuition and fees, and take full advantage of the student services we provide.

Our University
UW-Superior offers a quality liberal arts education combined with solid professional training. Our campus is one of 13 comprehensive universities in the University of Wisconsin System. UW-Superior specializes in providing the atmosphere of a private liberal arts college with the services and price of a public university. Because of our size, students get more opportunities to take part in campus activities, use equipment and facilities, and work one-on-one with professors. UW-Superior shares in the mission of the University of Wisconsin System.

UW-Superior traces its roots to 1893, when state legislators established Superior Normal School to train teachers. The institution grew steadily, becoming Superior State Teachers College in 1926 and granting its first bachelor's degree. Graduate programs were added following World War II. In 1971 the college became part of the University of Wisconsin System and assumed its present name.

Today, the university continues to be known for its outstanding teacher education programs, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition, it has built a reputation for academic excellence through programs in business, biology, computers, psychology, social work, communications, music, health and other fields.

In 2000, UW-Superior was designated Wisconsin’s Public Liberal Arts College by the University of Wisconsin System’s Board of Regents. In 2001, the University became a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges.

UW-Superior's enrollment currently is about 2,800 students. Most come from cities throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota, but the campus population also includes students from many other states as well as countries around the world. They enjoy a student-to-faculty ratio of approximately 16:1. About 90 percent of our faculty and teaching staff hold the highest degree available in their fields. In 2000, the university was designated as Wisconsin’s Public Liberal Arts College by the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents. In 2001 it became a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges.

Along with traditional campus programs, UW-Superior offers a variety of learning programs to meet the varied needs of people in Wisconsin and around the country. Our Distance Learning Center enables people to complete a bachelor's degree from their homes. Distance learning technology also enables the university to telecast courses throughout Wisconsin by live, interactive video. The Office of Continuing Education/Extension offers a wide array of courses and certificate programs that make university expertise available to people throughout the region.
 

Our community
Superior offers the convenience of city living and the year-round recreational opportunities of the North Woods.

Located in the northwest corner of Wisconsin, Superior overlooks the western tip of Lake Superior. This historic city of 27,000 remains an important Great Lakes port and railroad hub while also providing jobs in retail, manufacturing and education. The city combines with neighboring Duluth, Minnesota, to provide a rich metro setting with live entertainment and shopping as well as numerous opportunities for internships and jobs. Yet, it's just a short drive from fishing, hiking, skiing, snowmobiling and other outdoor activities.

Traveling to Superior is fast and easy on four-lane highways U.S. 53 and Interstate 35 as well as major highways U.S. 2 and Wisconsin 35. Airline service is available to Duluth International Airport.

The university seeks to maintain a positive educational environment and regards sexual harassment of any student by other students or members of the faculty or staff as unacceptable behavior as defined in the Sexual Harassment Policy approved by the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents on May 8, 1981.

This catalog is prepared to enable prospective and enrolled students, and others, to learn about the University of Wisconsin-Superior. It is also intended to explain policies, requirements, regulations and procedures in a manner that will help the student progress through the university. Faculty, advisors and staff at the University of Wisconsin-Superior will provide assistance, but ultimately the responsibility for compliance rests with the student.
