Broad Field Science

Broad Field Science is a comprehensive liberal arts major. Students seeking Wisconsin Teacher Certification in Broad Field Science should contact the Teacher Education Department for details.

A total of 54 credits in science as follows:

1. A minimum of eight credits in each of the following areas: Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, and Physics. The required courses are listed below.

CHEM 105 General Chemistry     5 credits
CHEM 106 General Chemistry     4 credits

Total: 9 credits

Earth Science

Physics
PHYS 107 General Physics     4 credits
PHYS 108 General Physics     4 credits

2. Additional credits in courses which normally satisfy the major or minor requirements in two of the four areas for a total of 14 credits in the subject. Below are several possibilities the student may use to fulfill this requirement.
a. 14 credits in Chemistry and 14 in Biology may be obtained by taking an additional five credits in Chemistry and an additional six credits in Biology.

b. 14 credits in Biology and 14 credits in Earth Science may be obtained by taking an additional six credits in Biology; the additional six credits in Earth Science may be satisfied with any Geology course, BIOL 312 (Biogeography, 3 credits), GEOG 281 (Physical Geography, 3 credits), GEOG 281 (Cartography, 2 credits), GEOG 491 (Undergraduate Research, 14 credits), GEOG 281 (Research in Geography, 3 credits), GEOG 481 (Special Topics, 1-4 credits), and PHYS 100 (Astronomy, 4 credits).

c. 14 credits in Chemistry and 14 credits in Physics may be obtained by taking an additional five credits in Chemistry and an additional four or six credits in Physics depending on the student's choice of PHYS 107, 108 or 201, 202.

3. Additional credits to be taken from any of the four areas and/or the History and Philosophy of Science to bring the total credits to 54.

4. Students seeking teacher certification must take:

a. A course in the History and Philosophy of Science. PHYS 300 (3 credits) satisfies this requirement.

b. A minimum of 6 credits in mathematics.
