The University of Wisconsin-Superior offers a graduate program
in the visual arts which leads to the Master of Arts degree. The

Master of Arts Degree in Art
The Master of Arts program in Art is offered for students
seeking a professional degree program in the Studio Arts, Art
History, Art Therapy or Art Education with studio emphasis. The
requirements for the degree have been designed to allow for
flexibility to suit the needs and goals of individual candidates.
The program also provides an opportunity for individuals whose
goals do not follow traditional schemes to pursue art studies and
experiences related to professional studio objectives.
700-Level Courses
Candidates must meet the minimum required for University Graduate
Studies. 700-level courses in Art may be attempted only with
permission of the major advisor and the instructor of record.
Coursework parallels content at the 600 level with additional
research and conference requirements. Students must meet
regularly with their graduate committee.
Admission Requirements
M.A.: Studio Curriculum and Art History
Student applicants may be admitted to the program upon
completion of the following minimum prerequisites:

A bachelor's degree in Art from an accredited institution
with a minimum of 60 quarter hours or 40 semester hour
credits in Art. At least 20 semester credits of the
bachelor's degree work should be in studio courses.

Completion of a minimum of six semester credits in Art
History.

Presentation of a slide portfolio of representative
studio work with emphasis in the applicant's area of
specialization. The portfolio should contain 12 to 24
two-inch-by-two-inch color slides in transparent plastic
slide holders. Each slide should be labeled to indicate
correct placement in a slide projector. Three-dimensional
work should be represented with several views. All slides
must be sent to the department chair and will be returned
following the review.

Two letters of recommendation from college art faculty
who are familiar with the applicant's work and potential.

Deadline for application for Fall Semester enrollment is
the previous April 1. Applications received after April 1
will be considered as vacancies allow.

Applicants who do not meet the above prerequisites may be
admitted with the approval of the Art faculty following
their satisfactory completion of deficiencies.
M.A.: Art Education and Art Therapy Curricula
Student applicants may be admitted to the program upon
completion of the following minimum prerequisites:

The candidate for admission must satisfy the general
admission requirements for Graduate Studies, including
graduation from an accredited college or university.

The candidate must have an undergraduate major in Art or
must have completed the equivalent of the Art foundation
courses as specified in the Bachelor of Science degree
requirements for Art in this catalog. Art Therapy
candidates must have 15 semester credits of Studio Art
and 12 semester credits in Abnormal and Developmental
Psychology. (Deficiencies may be taken at UW-Superior
before or during first year of attendance.)

Two letters of recommendation from college faculty who
are familiar with the applicant's work and potential.

Art Therapy candidates must submit a slide portfolio
showing basic proficiency in drawing, painting, and
sculpture. Other media, i.e. photography, ceramics, etc.,
may be included. Twenty slides suggested.
Candidates will be advised individually, and programs designed
to meet individual needs while satisfying all necessary
requirements for the degree.
Degree Requirements
M.A.: Studio Curriculum
The minimum requirements for the degree include a total of 30
semester credits of approved course work to include the
following:
1. Nine credits of Art History.
2. Two credits of Graduate Art Seminar.
3. Three credits of related courses from: Art Education,
Art History and/or courses outside of Art approved by the
advisor.
4. Twelve credits within a field of Art concentration.
5. Three credits of Art electives.
6. One credit of thesis or an exhibition from the area of
Art concentration with a supporting paper; a final oral
comprehensive related to the thesis or exhibition. If the
thesis option is chosen, three copies of the thesis are to be
submitted, one to the major advisor and two to the Graduate
Studies office for transmittal to the library.
M.A.: Art History Curriculum
The minimum requirements for the degree include a total of 30
semester credits of approved coursework to include the following:

Twelve credits in Art History.

Six credits studio area.
-
Six credits related courses approved by the major
advisor.

Two credits Graduate Art Seminar.
-
Four credits Art Thesis. Scholarly project carried over
two semesters, two credits each semester.
M.A.: Art Education
The minimum requirements for the degree include a total of 30
semester credits of approved coursework to include the following:
1. Nine credits in Art Education from among the following
courses:
ART 735 Research in Art Education - Arranged
ART 781 Art for Special Education
ART 784 Development of Creative Functioning
ART 782 Art for the Gifted and Talented - Arranged
2. Two credits Graduate Art Seminar - ART 790.
3. Three credits Art History.
4. Nine credits graduate-level Studio Art.
5. Six credits of cognate courses from related areas such
as Art Therapy, Art History, Psychology, Counseling,
Communicating Arts, or Teacher Education.
6. One credit ART 799 - Terminal Project. Requires
approval of major advisor. Choice of thesis or exhibition
with supporting paper. Final oral comprehensive related to
the thesis or exhibition. If the thesis is chosen, three
appropriately bound copies of the thesis are to be submitted,
one to the Visual Arts office and two to the Graduate Studies
office for transmittal to the library.
Graduate candidates for teacher certification must fulfill all
undergraduate requirements for certification. Deficiencies must
be corrected along with the completion of program graduate
requirements.
Art Education majors who wish an in-depth concentration in a
studio area may select the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with

M.A.: Art Therapy (Limited Enrollment)
The minimum requirements for the degree include a total of
47 semester credits of approved coursework to include:
1. Nine credits of Studio Art (on advisement).
2. Fifteen credits of Art Therapy.

concentration and approved by the instructor.
6. Three credits Research in Art Therapy.
7. Two credits Graduate Art Seminar.
