The anthropology and sociology program disposes students to understand and take responsibility for the social – the world structured by institutions, made meaningful through culture and lived in our actions. Through courses open to all as well as those with major and minor specialization, the program carries out the university’s mission of helping students to become life-long learners who seek understanding as a valuable end in its own right. The program implements the university mission of opening access to the world, its accumulated knowledge and ways of knowing. The program practices the university mission by helping students to apply the skills of reflective judgment and the conceptual tools of the program to responsibility to our larger community.
Students who want to major in sociology would benefit from an introduction to the field through SOCI 101 or SOCI 200 and three additional credits in sociology. On completion of these six credits, the student majoring in sociology should contact the program coordinator to make an advising appointment. The student will meet program faculty with the aim of getting acquainted and learning about activities and requirements.
Sociology Major
Minimum of 33 credits in Sociology, at least 21 of which must be in courses numbered over 300. Students are required to complete the following courses:
SOCI 101 Introduction to Sociology...................3 credits
SOCI 395 Sociological Research Methods.........3 credits
SOCI 371 The Sociological Tradition.................3 credits
SOCI 498 Senior Thesis....................................3 credits
ANTH 101 The Human Experience....................3 credits
The remaining Sociology credits are elective.
To graduate with a degree in sociology, majors must have earned a final
GPA of 2.5 in sociology classes and 2.2 overall.
Sociology Minor
A minimum of 22 credits, of which at least 12 credits must be in courses
numbered 300 and above. All students are required to complete:
SOCI 101 Introduction to Sociology..............................................3 credits
SOCI 371 The Sociological Tradition.............................................3 credits
The remaining credits are elective. A maximum of nine elective credits
may be taken from among ANTH 101, 302, 306, 315, 320, 368, 490, and 499.
Sociology Minor
At least 22 credits in Sociology, including the courses listed below.
Requirements must also be met for a secondary education major and the
Professional Secondary Education Teaching Certification Requirements of
the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
