This six session workshop is intended to teach basic skills of American Sign Language and provide an overview of deaf culture. Students will learn how to start up a conversation with deaf individuals including how to greet, introduce themselves, and ask others who they are and where they are from.
In addition students will learn how to describe objects and each other, numbers 1-30, as well as the American Sign Language alphabet. Components of deaf culture, as well as the basic history of the creation of American Sign Language, will also be included in the workshop sessions.
This workshop is highly relevant for teachers of all levels, early childhood educators, parents and relatives of deaf children, and anyone else who wants to learn basic sign language skills.
Julie Guddeck is a Special Education teacher for ISD #709 in Duluth, MN. She works with students ages birth to 21 years old who are either deaf or hard of hearing. She has been a teacher for the past 13 years and has taught American Sign Language for the past 6 years, both at the University of Wisconsin-Superior and the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Julie holds a B.A. in Elementary Education from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. and an M.A. in The Education of the Deaf from San Diego State University.
