Discover a wealth of local shipping and mining history along Lake Superior. Speak to the director of the University of Wisconsin-Superior Transportation and Logistics Center about the importance, past and present, of rail and ships in the harbor city of Superior and beyond. Learn about mining in the region at historic Fairlawn Mansion, where you glimpse the life of an iron magnate, and on a daylong exploration of the Soudan Underground Mine, once a real working coal mine. Visit the Harvest States grain elevators and Midwest Energy coal yard, then learn more about the shipping on Lake Superior on field trips to the Murphy Oil ship refueling station and the Burlington Northern Railroad Taconite Loading Facility.
