SUPERIOR, Wis. - UW-Superior's Center for Continuing Education will present "An Integrative Holistic Approach to Understanding and Managing Pain" from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at Barkers Island Inn & Convention Center, 300 Marinara Drive, Superior, WI. The conference is intended for healthcare professionals, though the public is also welcome to attend.

According to the American Chronic Pain Association, approximately 50 million Americans are living with chronic pain, and nearly one-third of all Americans will experience chronic pain at some point in their lives. The Association says that chronic pain is the number one cause of disability among adults in the U.S. and costs society more than $100 billion each year.

"While medications are important in treating pain," says Esther Gieschen, program manager with UW-Superior's Center for Continuing Education, "drugs alone aren't the answer. Research shows that patients generally find greater relief with an integrative holistic approach."

By highlighting a number of evidence-based integrative strategies, Gieschen hopes that the conference will raise awareness about holistic, non-pharmalogical treatments that can be powerful tools for alleviating pain.
