Elderhostel at the University of Wisconsin-Superior offers programs for both local residents and those who wish to travel to our region. Our programs offer an excellent opportunity to learn and to meet new people from all over.

Apostle Island Exploration
Study the struggle for balance between tourism and conservation in this National Lakeshore with the National Park Service. Enjoy a guided exploration of the Madeline Island Museum and a 3 hour boat cruise on the University Research Vessel, the L.L. Smith Jr., during the beautiful spring season, passing by lighthouses and seacaves, wildlife and maybe an ore boat or two! Learn about this incredible area from the people who live here and learn about their way of life now and how it was in the past.
Bayfield Area History
Gateway to the shimmering beauty of Lake Superior, the historic world of the Anishinabe Indians and French Fur Traders. This area encompasses Wisconsin's northern woodlands and Lake Superior's majestic shoreline. Visit local museums, shops and just enjoy the beauty of this well known area.

Aquatic Entomology of the Brule River
Explore the forests and trout fishery along the famous Brule River. Discuss water quality. Collect, identify and use aquatic insects and other macro invertebrates to evaluate the Brule's pristine waters.

Raptor Migration Around Lake Superior
Learn about the many raptors that migrate over our "head of the lakes" area in the fall due to our unique geographical location. Experience first-hand this annual event as we journey to observe and count these magnificent avians during our day-long field trip to "Hawk Ridge." While there, simply stand in awe at the incredible view over our mighty Lake Superior. This is a double course.
Shipwrecks and Lighthouses: Their Colorful History on Lake Superior
Travel back over the years to discover which ships went down or wrecked on Lake Superior, when and why. Relive the wrecks and learn who perished, who lived and how they were saved. Study the vital role lighthouses played then, and their place in life on the lake now. Enjoy a day-long field trip to our most famous local lighthouse at Split Rock, and relish our beautiful fall days in the process.
