Submit Proposals October 1-5 for Fall 2013-14 First Year Seminar

When: Sep 13, 2012 to Oct 5, 2012
Proposals are being accepted for First Year Seminars for Fall 2013 and Spring 2014.  They should be submitted to Suzanne Griffith by October 5, 2012.

For information about the application process, or general information about First Year Seminars, go to the CETL website at www.uwsuper.edu/cetl/fys/index.cfm.  Contact Dr. Suzanne Griffith, the First Year Seminar Coordinator, (at ext. 8316, Swenson Hall 2068, or sgriffit@uwsuper.edu) to discuss any issues not covered or questions you may have.

*If you are interested and have not taught a FYS before then please contact me soon so that I can support you in writing this proposal and have it done in time.

*If you have taught a FYS in the past and want to repeat this FYS in 2013-14 the proposal will need 'tweaking' to insure it meets the new General Education criteria before it is resubmitted.

*If you have taught one before and want to do a new FYS then you will need to use the new proposal form and meet the new General Education criteria.

The intention of the First Year Seminars is to provide students a supportive and transitioning course, academically grounded in content and discipline, which intentionally and explicitly helps first year students understand the expectations of a college education and strengthens the skills they need to succeed. By keeping FYS small (15 students) and just for first year students, an environment develops where they can be encouraged and challenged to think for themselves; to be open to new ideas, people, and perspectives; and to work together to enhance the learning of all seminar members.

Updated proposal materials are available on the CETL web site for down loading: http://www.uwsuper.edu/cetl/fys/index.cfm

FYS PROGRAM GOAL

…to integrate students into a community of higher order learners by engaging their interest and imagination.

Each seminar will advance the program goal through the following student learning goals:

}1. Students will be more disposed to value learning in its own right and to see themselves as having the ability and the right to invest themselves in this learning.

}2. Students will be more disposed to pursue learning collaboratively, both in formal academic settings and elsewhere.

}3. Students will be more disposed to actively question previous knowledge and examine new ideas and multiple perspectives.
