UW-Superior at the President's Summit

UW-Superior staff attended the annual UW System President’s Summit on Excellence in Teaching and Learning.  Look for their insights and experiences in the upcoming May issue of the CETL Connections Newsletter.

Nine members of the UW-Superior community presented sessions at the University of Wisconsin System 2011 President's Summit on Excellence in Teaching and Learning on April 14 and 15 in Madison, Wisconsin. Another 15 UW-Superior faculty and staff attended the Summit. The President's Summit provides a forum for faculty and academic staff from around the state to recognize and share the collective expertise of those committed to excellence in teaching and learning.

Full details of the summit conference and presenters can be found on the web at http://www.wisconsin.edu/vpacad/summit/.  Registrations through CETL closed in February 11, 2011.  Fifteen of those attending the conference traveled via mini-vans arranged through the CETL office. 

Keynote speakers at the conference included Dr. Randy Bass, Professor of English and Associate Provost for Institutional Renewal at Georgetown University and Dr. Sylvia Hurtado, Professor at the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

Presentations by UW-Superior faculty and academic staff include:

  • Music Composition and Improvisation in Undergraduate Music Education Classes by Dr. Lois Guderian, Assistant Professor of Music and Music Education Coordinator (Thursday, Session 1, 1:00-3:15 p.m., Assembly room).
  • Assessing the 'Success' of UW-Superior's First Year Seminars by Dr. Suzanne Griffith, Professor of Education and CETL Coordinator of the First Year Seminar Program; Dr. Maria Cuzzo, Professor of Legal Studies and Director of CETL; Dr. Wendy Kropid, Professor of Literature; and Dr. Joel Sipress, Professor of History (Thursday, Session 3, 3:30-4:30 p.m., University room B).
  •  Multiple Disciplines, Dimensions, Discoveries: Painting and Writing about Local History by Ms. Beth Grbavcich, Senior Lecturer of Writing, and Dr. Kathy Hubbard, Assistant Professor of Art Education (Friday, Session 4, 8:30-9:30 a.m.,  Assembly room).
  • Faculty Development: Orienting New Hires by Dr. Maria Stalzer Wyant Cuzzo, Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and Professor of Legal Studies (Friday, Session 8m 3:15 - 4:15 p.m., Conference room I).
  • Wisconsin Teaching Fellows and Scholars 2010 - Reception and Poster Session: Dr. Gary Keveles, Professor of Criminal Justice, and Dr. Hilary Fezzey, Assistant Professor of British Literature, will present their WTFS projects during the poster session to be held Thursday, from 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. in the Wisconsin Ballroom.
