Blink! Regents meet, semester ends, Happy Holidays

Regents take up classified employee governance, the Governor talks Northwoods economy and holidays wrap up the semester.

Dear Colleagues,

It is hard to believe that the semester is about to come to an end!   I think we blinked and it was over.

The past few weeks have been packed. The Board of Regents meeting was held on December 6 and 7 in Madison. The highlights include 1) governance status for classified staff through the new categorization of University Staff to take effect on July 1, 2013 and which will be written into Board policy, 2) the lifting of a 25% cap on out-of-state student  enrollment for Madison; the new cap will be 27.5% and the guaranteed of more spots for Wisconsin students.

The Governor's Northwoods Economic Summit followed the next week.  The conference was attended by economic development, state, county, and city personnel including the Governor's cabinet secretaries.  I made two presentations about UW Superior - one which addressed how the University builds better communities, businesses, and workforce. The other presented how we are working in partnership with our K-12 and business colleagues, and to improve graduation rates and smooth the transfer process. It was a wonderful forum for our region to see first what great work we do enhance the area.

In between, the campus was full of activities which were the culmination of a semester worth of hard work.

In remembrance of the terrible tragedy in Newtown, I want to remind you about the SAFE ALERT system we have on campus. Part of our emergency response plan includes using our SAFE alert system to communicate emergency messages to the campus community. Every student, faculty and staff member is automatically added to the SAFE alert system with their uwsuper.edu email address.  Please take a minute to review your account and update your notification preferences which include options to add text alerts, voice mail, home phone and additional email addresses.

It was so nice to see so many of you at the coffee break on Tuesday. I wish each of you and your families a safe, happy, and restorative holiday break!  We look forward to seeing you back on campus in January. Dog Max and I are going to look forward to some snow in which to romp!

Renée
