Students and their families often ask what kind of computer is best for their university work. The answer is: the kind of computer you are most comfortable using. Many students find a desktop computer a great tool for organizing academic work and study. Desktop computers are also very affordable. Other students find laptop computers convenient for in-class note-taking and use around campus, especially with UW-Superior's growing wireless computer network.
If you are planning to purchase a new computer, the following specifications are recommended by university technology staff:
Desktop Windows Computer
Laptop Windows Computer
Desktop Apple Computer
iMac 17
Laptop Apple Computer
MacBook

Would you like to purchase Microsoft's Office XP software suite for your PC or Office 2004 for Mac for less? These and other discounted software packages and operating systems are available to you through WISC, the UW System's Software cooperative.

Your E-Hive Login ID - your user name and password - is your key to the university's E-Hive academic information system, to your UW-Superior JacketMail, and to networked computers in campus labs and offices. Please keep your Login ID secure and don't share it with others. E-Hive is accessed through the university's homepage at www.uwsuper.edu.
If you're a new student, a letter with your E-Hive Login ID was sent to you from the appropriate admissions office (Graduate Studies, Distance Learning Center, Undergraduate Advisement office, Extension admissions, or the International Studies office). If you attended SOAR, your letter was in your SOAR packet. If you did not receive your E-Hive Login ID letter, contact the Technology Helpdesk at 394-8300 or 1-800-806-2890.
Continuing students continue to use the same E-Hive Login ID that you used last term. If you have misplaced your E-Hive Login ID or forgotten your password, visit the Technology Resource Center in McCaskill 122, or call 394-8300 or 1-800-806-2890.
Your UW-Superior E-Mail address is "username"@uwsuper.edu, where "username" is your E-Hive ID username. For example, if you are Jane Doe and have the E-Hive username JDOE, your address is jdoe@uwsuper.edu.
You'll receive official communication from the university at your UW-Superior E-Mail address, so be sure to read mail regularly to stay informed. You can access your mail with Outlook in any campus lab, or on the Web anywhere from Outlook Mail Web Access. Instructions to access your mailbox are available on the login page.
Each UW-Superior student has a printing account on the campus network. This account is charged when you print documents in campus computer labs. The Student Technology Fee provides funds for $30 worth of printing each academic term. Charges are 7 cents per black and white page, or 34 cents per color page--color laser printing is available in the Old Main 130 and Library labs.
Click the "$" icon at the lower right of your computer screen for a report of your account. If you use your $30 allocation before the end of the term, you'll be billed for your printing balance when the term ends.
Each UW-Superior student has file storage space on the university network. Your online storage drive appears as the G: drive when you open the "My Computer" icon on Windows PCs in campus labs. You can save your work there, then retrieve it later in any lab. Our backup system ensures that your files will be there when needed. You can also access your G:Drive through the E-Hive over the internet however a high speed connection is recommended.
When you're off campus, you can read your UW-Superior e-mail from a Web browser anywhere in the world by linking to Outlook Mail Web Access. Instructions to access your mailbox are available on the login page.
UW-Superior has licensed Symantec (formerly Norton) Antivirus software for Windows-based computers for all students. To obtain your software, check out an installation disk from Technology Support Services in McCaskill 122. If you have high speed Internet service, you can download the software from www.uwsuper.edu/cms/antivirus/. Instructions to download are available on the page.
