The Elementary Education major prepares learners for careers as certified teachers in schools, as well as other careers working with children. The major is designed to meet the high standards for teacher certification of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Graduates are eligible for initial licensure to teach either pre-kindergarten through sixth grade or first through eighth grade in Wisconsin schools, and may qualify for licensure in other states depending on the requirements of those states.
The Elementary Education major requires completion of a specific set of courses, including specific general education requirements. A teaching minor is required in addition to major requirements. Current available teaching minors are Adaptive Education/Special Education, Broadfield Language Arts/Reading Teaching, Early Childhood, Geography, Health Education, Library Science, and Social Studies Teaching.
The degree can be completed primarily through online studies. Two required courses in Health and Human Performance must be completed in Superior and are offered concurrently each summer in a three week block. Early Childhood minors must complete three Saturday seminars in Superior. All students are required to complete a semester of fulltime student teaching arranged through the university's Office of Field Experiences.
