TO:  Faculty Senate Executive Committee

RE:  Undergraduate Research at UWS

Individuals among the instructional staff here at UWS have long engaged in 
undergraduate research; over the past couple of years efforts have been made to make 
this research more visible and accessible across campus.  This year we joined with 22 
other COPLAC institutions in a grant application to “Institutionalize Undergraduate 
Research” on the campus.  The application was successful; it is an NSF grant being 
administered through the National Council for Undergraduate Research (NCUR).
The four of us have committed to serving as campus liaisons for this grant work; all of 
us are committed to broadening visibility and access to undergraduate research here 
on campus.  
We respectfully request consideration of the attached proposal calling for 
establishment of an Undergraduate Research Committee.  Cognizant of the need to 
not add to our committee work here on campus, we have proposed coordinating this 
with dissolution of an existing committee (Senior Year Experience) whose charge has 
been accomplished.
We would appreciate having this brought to the Faculty Senate for consideration this 
spring.  One or more of us can be available to attend a Faculty Senate meeting to 
answer any questions that may arise.
