File a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
All federal aid requires that you file a FAFSA. A new or renewal FAFSA must be completed for EACH academic year you plan to attend. To file a FAFSA:
Go online and electronically file the FAFSA. When you file your FAFSA, you will need your previous year tax information, as well as that of your parents (if you are considered dependent, determined by a series of questions on the FAFSA). If you would like a pre-application worksheet before filing on the web, you can print one from the FAFSA website, or pick one up in the Financial Aid office. When you file on the web, you have the choice of submitting your (and your parent, if applicable) signature electronically, which requires obtaining a pin for both you and your parent, or mailing in a signature page. The FAFSA site explains both of these options.
OR, file a paper FAFSA. You may print a paper FAFSA from the FAFSA website, or you may call 1-800-4-FED-AID to request that one be mailed to you. After completing it, mail it to the Federal Student Aid Programs, as indicated on the application.
Be sure that you list UW-Superior as one of your college choices. The UW-Superior Title IV School Code is 003925.
File your FAFSA as soon as you can after January 1. UW-Superior's priority filing date is April 1. Students whose applications are processed and completed by this date will receive the best financial aid package available to them. In order to have your application processed and completed by this date, to receive priority funding, we recommend that you file your FAFSA for the upcoming academic year by MARCH 1st.
If you are a UW-Superior continuing student, have filed a FAFSA for the current academic year, and provided a valid e-mail address, you will receive an e-mail renewal notice. All renewal eligible applicants will receive renewal reminder notices in November/December. You may also complete a Renewal FAFSA on the web; you will need to have your electronic pin to do this. If you file a Renewal FAFSA, many answers are based on your prior year's application, reducing the number of questions you must complete. It is your responsibility to file a new or renewal FAFSA for each academic year.
If you are a transfer student, and have already filed the FAFSA or renewal FAFSA for the current academic year, you do not need to file again. However, if you did not list UW-Superior to receive your FAFSA information, you will need to submit to the Financial Aid office your SAR with an attached note that you want to add UW-Superior and we will make the change for you. You may also call the Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243 to add UW-Superior's school code, or go to FAFSA on the web, and select "Make corrections to a processed FAFSA". UW-Superior's school code is 003925. Your financial aid will not automatically transfer from one school to the next.
Summer College: There is a one-page summer aid
application that must be filled out; this is in addition to the FAFSA for the current aid year (prior to summer school session you plan to attend). The summer aid application must be received by the Financial Aid office no later than the deadline indicated on the form, in addition to having the remainder of your financial aid file complete. Aid is awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis, and can depend on the aid you have already received for the current academic year.
The deadline date for processing aid for Summer College 2008 is past.
Study abroad: Fill out a Request for Financial Aid Revision form in addition to your FAFSA. This is used to assess the additional cost of participating in a program of study off-campus. This form is available online, or you may pick it up from the Financial Aid office, 110 Old Main.
Computer Purchase: You may request that your budget be expanded for the cost of
a computer. Generally, it will only be filled with additional loan money, if you
are eligible. You may do this only one time during your career at UW-Superior. To do so, fill out the, fill out the
2008-2009 Administrative
Request Form.
Review your Student Aid Report (SAR)
You will be able to access and print your SAR online once your FAFSA is processed by the Department of Education. If you file a paper copy, you will receive your SAR in the mail approximately 2-4 weeks after filing (if you don't, call the central processor at 1-800-433-3243) or via email if you provided a valid address. Your SAR lists the information you reported. Review your SAR carefully, and make any necessary corrections online, or submit it to the Financial Aid office. If there are no corrections, keep your SAR with your school records - you may need it at a later date.
Verification
At least thirty percent of all students will be selected by the Federal Government or by our office for the verification process. We are required to verify the accuracy of the information you provided on your FAFSA. If you are selected for verification, you will receive a letter from us requesting additional documentation, along with either a dependent or independent Verification Worksheet and the
2008-2009 Supplemental Verification Worksheet. Complete and return all requested information to the Financial Aid office as soon as possible so that your aid can continue to be processed. You will be asked for your previous year's signed federal tax returns, W-2's, and possibly additional information. If you are dependent, you will need to submit your parent's documents in addition to your own. If you are independent and married, you will need to provide your spouse's as well. Please make certain your name and student ID # is on all documentation you turn into us. We will make any corrections necessary based on the information you submit.
Award Letter
Once all information is received and processed by us, we determine the type and amount of aid for which you are eligible. We use a uniform budget for all students to calculate a "Cost of Attendance." From that, we subtract your Estimated Family Contribution (from your SAR) to determine your financial need. Then we mail you an award letter stating your financial aid package for the upcoming academic year. Please read your award letter carefully. The letter is for your reference, but if there are changes to your status, you MUST let us know. For example, if your award letter states that you are a full-time student and you intend to only be a three-quarter time student, you must notify us. We would need to change your award to reflect your new status, and until that is done, your aid would not disburse to your account. You must accept the aid that you want on your ehive
account. Also, if you choose to reduce or decline a loan, you must either notify
us by filling out a 2008-2009 Administrative
Request Form. You may also make the change on your e-hive account;
instructions
for 2008-2009 are included with your award letter. In addition to your award letter you will receive
Required Reading for
2008-2009 with information referencing the award letter - please read it carefully.
If you will be receiving a scholarship, or other education benefit that is not included in your award letter, you must let us know immediately.
E-hive
You may also view or adjust your financial aid award on your student e-hive account.
Changes in income/Special cirumstances
If, during the course of the academic year, a significant change in family income occurs, you may be eligible to have your financial aid situation re-evaluated. Generally, you cannot update information on the FAFSA during the year. However, UW-Superior may take changes into consideration. If a change in family income, household size, or other unusual circumstances arise, please contact our office to discuss the situation to determine if a re-evaluation is appropriate.
