Undergraduate aid

Many types of financial aid are available to undergraduate students: Grants, Scholarships, Loans, Employment, and Armed Forces Benefits. The following briefly explains these types of aid. Please click on each type for a list of eligibility, availability and application procedures. Limited aid is available to international students.

Grants: A grant is a cash award based on financial need. You do not repay a grant. By filing a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), you are automatically considered for most federal grants. However, you may need to take other application steps for certain grants. Check each grant program individually. Minnesota residents attending UW-Superior must apply with the Minnesota Higher Education Coordinating Board to receive tuition reciprocity.

Scholarships: A scholarship is a cash gift awarded based on the criteria set by the sponsoring organization or donor. You do not repay a scholarship. Check each scholarship individually for information on eligibility and application.

Loans: There are several loan programs available to students. "Subsidized loans" are loans which the federal government pays the interest while you are enrolled in school, and during a 6 month grace period. "Unsubsidized loans" are loans in which you are responsible for the interest that accumulates as soon as you take out the loan. Students receiving loans through the Federal Direct Loan Program must complete the US Department of Education's Online Entrance Counseling Session, and sign a Master Promissory Note before receiving the first loan disbursement. Online Exit Counseling is also required before graduation or withdrawal from school. Perkins loans are also available through UW-Superior, as well as PLUS loans for parents, and other alternative loans.

Employment: Various jobs are available to students, both on and off campus. Federal Work Study is a program offered as part of your financial aid package in which an allotted amount of dollars may be earned through a job. Student Assist are other jobs available on-campus for students that do not receive work study. Area employers provide opportunities off-campus.

Armed Forces Benefits: Some students receive monthly stipends, or tuition assistance/reimbursement to attend school through a connection with the Armed Forces. Many different programs are available, depending on the students' Armed Forces status.
