Interlibrary Loan Policy

An Interlibrary Loan (ILL) takes place when we borrow from another library in order to fill a patron's request for materials not owned by the JDH Library. Books, videos, DVD's, theses, and other materials are loaned to JDH Library via ILL. In the case of non-circulating items, like periodical articles, the lending library either photocopies or sends an electronic article which the patrons generally do not have to return.

Who May Order

Interlibrary Loan services are available to all UW-Superior students, staff, and faculty. Other patrons should contact their local public library for interlibrary loan services.

How to Request

Please use the Online Catalog to check all UW libraries for books/videos and use Universal Borrowing instead of ILL if you can locate another UW library that owns the item.  For articles, use the list of Journals JDH Library Owns to ensure that we do not own the journal needed.

After this step, please access the ILLiad system.

Notification and Tracking

When the material requested is received, patrons will be notified via campus email.  The email will indicate the method you need to use to obtain the item.  All books, videos, and some articles will be waiting for you at the Circulation Desk.  Many articles will be posted at a website and you will be able to download the pdf file.

You can see whether an ILL has been shipped by logging into ILLiad and checking your outstanding requests.  If the request has not arrived in a reasonable amount of time, please contact the ILL staff.  Most ILL items are received within one week.  Articles can arrive much quicker, usually within 24 hours.

The time you can keep a loaned item varies. The lending library determines when the book is due. Most libraries allow one renewal.

It is your responsibility to pick up the requested item at the circulation desk.  JDH Library reserves the right to refuse requests which are not in support of academic research. Requests for research materials that are available in our library or through other local libraries will also be returned to patrons.

Restrictions

All requests must be in compliance with the National Interlibrary Loan Code, other regional, state, and local resource sharing agreements and copyright law. Lending libraries may place restrictions on the use of any loaned item and may request that an item be returned prior to its due date.

Questions

Questions or concerns regarding Interlibrary Loan should be directed to the Interlibrary Loan Office. The telephone number is 394-8130.
