About the Government Documents Collection

The Jim Dan Hill Library is a Selective Depository Library in the Federal Depository Library Program. This means that the library chooses a portion of publications produced by the United States Federal Government to add to its collection.

These publications are sent to the library free of charge. The Library is responsible for housing these publications and providing access to them. Currently the Jim Dan Hill Library selects about 30% of the total of federal government publications produced annually. In addition the Jim Dan Hill Library has been designated a selective depository library by the State of Wisconsin. The State of Wisconsin chooses which state documents are sent to the library. If there is a particular Wisconsin document the library does not have, the library can attempt to order it from the state. However, many Wisconsin documents are now available free of charge over the Internet so this is usually not necessary. Additionally, another local source for Wisconsin government documents is the Superior Public Library, which is a regional depository for Wisconsin documents.

The majority of federal and state documents in the Jim Dan Hill Library pertain to areas that are part of the curriculum at the University of Wisconsin Superior and issues affecting the 7th Congressional District of Wisconsin. In particular the Jim Dan Hill Library collects documents relating to education and legal issues.

However, the library also has a large collection of documents relating to natural history, an extensive map collection, and documents pertaining to American History. The government publications held at the Jim Dan Hill Library come in a variety of formats including paper, CD-ROM, microform, and electronically through the Internet.
