The American Physiological Society
Physiology Fellowships for Minority Students
The American Physiological Society is accepting applications for doctoral fellowships in the physiological sciences for minority students.
Who is eligible: African-American, Hispanic, Native American, Native Alaskan, or Native Pacific Islander students who are American citizens or permanent residents and who are pursuing doctoral studies in physiology
Deadlines for applications: June 15 and January 15
Total amount to be awarded and number of awards: not specified.
Amount of individual awards: $18,000 for one year, renewable for a second year.
Frederick Douglass Teaching Scholars
The State System of Higher Education (SSHE) for Pennsylvania is offering summer teaching opportunities to graduate students entering the final year of terminal degree programs & preparing to be college teachers. These summer teaching positions are available at four system universities: Clarion University of PA, Indiana University of PA, Lock Haven University of PA, & West Chester University of PA. The purpose of the positions is to attract graduate students from historically underrepresented & underserved populations. Selected scholars will teach and/or co-teach one course during one of the two 5-week Summer Sessions.
This program is designed to give these graduate students teaching experience & to explore employment opportunities within a university setting, which is committed to cultural diversity. This is in keeping with the spirit of Douglass′ life of public service & the Universities mission to be a source of encouragement to the African American, Native American, Hispanic American, & Asian American communities.
Minimum requirements are: Applicants must be US citizens. Masters degree required & doctoral or ABD preferred; academic background in one of the fields taught; & at least three favorable letters of recommendation from faculty or professionals in the student′s field, including the student′s advisor. Preferred: experience teaching or as teaching assistant. Scholars will be compensated as adjunct faculty, according to each university′s collective bargaining agreement. Scholars are expected to live in on-campus housing in an apartment that will be provided at no charge & to participate in campus activities. Priority consideration will be given to applications postmarked by January 26, 2004.
