Buzz the mascot can't talk, but he sure can tweet!
UW-Superior mascot, Buzz, will be this week's guest voice of the UW System's "Knowledge Powers Wisconsin" campaign, taking his turn on the @UWpowersMe Twitter account August 5-11.
Buzz comes from a large family of communicators. Both his father and mother were also mascots at other major universities and like him, were also standouts in getting large crowds to cheer and laugh at college sporting events. Buzz is a big hit with fans of all ages in the Duluth-Superior area.
Buzz joins several others from the UW-Superior community who have tweeted for UWPowersMe. He writes, "I am thrilled to carry on the rich tradition of UW-Superior tweeters, and excited to be a guest tweeter for UWpowersMe." He added, "I can't wait to showcase more of the great things going on at UW-Superior in addition to what Mickey Fitch, Derek Krivinchuk and Jordan Appicelli did earlier this year." Fitch and Appicelli are both staff members and Krivinchuck is a student-athlete.
Buzz becomes the first mascot to tweet for UWPowersMe and that doesn't go unnoticed to him. He wrote, "We have Pointers, Badgers, Bluegolds, Blue Devils, Phoenix, Titans, Warhawks, Falcons, Pioneers, Eagles, but in the end it's a Yellowjacket that makes history. I'm proud of that!" During his last major appearance last month, Buzz was a big hit at the Wisconsin Science & Technology Symposium that was held at UW-Superior, with over 150 people around the state on his campus. He also shot a TV commercial recently with Chancellor Renée Wachter. With freshmen set to start school soon, Buzz is looking forward to showing them all of the new and renovated buildings on campus and tweeting about that as well.
The @UWpowersMe Twitter account allows mascots, students, faculty, alumni - even chancellors - the opportunity to take control for one week, telling their UW story as only they can. It is a component of the social media arm of "Knowledge Powers Wisconsin," the campaign that highlights how the UW System powers economic growth in Wisconsin, improving the state's competitive edge by leveraging human capital, supporting business and industry and strengthening local communities.
