News and Events Details
For over 30 years former UW-Superior theater professor John D. Munsell had a big impact on those that he came in contact with.
Twin Ports Stage is a new Superior-based theater group that has started thanks in part to the John D. Munsell Legacy Fund. Originally he was going to be part of the group, according to a report in the Duluth News Tribune. (See the full story in the "In the news" section.) John Munson, the regional manager of Wisconsin Public Radio, KUWS 91.3 played a part in the original Twin Ports Stage performance which is expected to air on the radio station in the future.
When the curtains were raised on the UW-Superior stage, for 34 years there was a good chance that John D. Munsell was involved in the production. The popular, energetic theater professor had a hand in numerous productions during his three decades of work at the university.
In February, John died from a brief illness at the age of 70. During his career at UW-Superior he was the director of theatre for over 25 years and department chair of Communicating Arts for nearly ten years.
He directed over 70 theatrical productions and organized a summer touring program that gave over 400 performances in 60 communities during a 10-year period.
John started working at UW-Superior in 1967 and retired in 2001 and during that time taught 30 different courses in theater, television and speech.
But his proudest role was that of father, grandfather and husband.
He attended the University of Michigan for his graduate and post-graduate work in theater. Following retirement, he still kept active by directing plays at the Black Hills Playhouse in South Dakota.
Munsell's impact on theatre will live on for decades as he produced creative students who are still involved in the business as theater professors, instructors, directors, actors, and box office administrators.
