"Even if you're a great writer, there's always room for improvement," freshman Marielle Fallon from Las Cruces, N.M., said.
Fallon, a regular users of UW-Superior's Writing Center, encourages all students to visit the center no matter their writing ability. "Whatever your job or life skills, it's really important to have a strong writing background to become a better and stronger writer," she said.
The Writing Center offers the services necessary to improve writing skills. Mechanics - grammar, punctuation, word choice, sentence structure - organizing ideas, and more can be worked on at the center.
"The students who come here, it helps them a lot, even if they don't realize it," Amy Petersilie, a Writing Center student consultant, said. "When they realize the benefits of taking advantage of the Writing Center, they really appreciate it. No one's ever complained about the help."
But do the consultants just read over a paper, make a few red pen marks, and send fellow students on their way?
No, said Fallon. Writing Center consultants also help students learn. "I really felt like I was part of my paper; I was proud of my paper," Fallon said. "I felt confident."
The consultants work to make the Writing Center's atmosphere welcoming. "All of the consultants seem to be very friendly and open . . . they don't judge you," Fallon said.
The Writing Center will move from its current location in Sundquist Hall to the new Swenson Hall for the Fall 2011 semester. The Writing Center will be able to offer day and evening hours in a single location in its prominent and easily accessible location in the new building.
For the remainder of the Spring 2011 semester, the Writing Center hours and locations are:
