The University of Wisconsin-Superior honored faculty and staff members May 11 for teaching ability, scholarly achievements and service to the campus and the community.
Awards presented at the university's annual Faculty and Staff Recognition Program include:
Teaching and Online Teaching Excellence - Heather Kahler, math instructor, was recognized for her teaching and communication skills in the Student Support Services Math Lab and in teaching an academic service-learning course.
Outstanding Team - The Human Resources Office staff of Margi Filteau, Julie Lund, Kathy Krause, Jenny Kroll and Nina Kangas worked many extra hours over the past year to implement the new system for payroll and benefits.
Excellence in Scholarship - Dr. Ralph Seelke, professor of biology, was recognized for his research on the ability of bacterial populations to evolve new functions in a selective environment and Dr. Mei Cao, assistant professor of transportation and logistics, was honored for her work that included publishing a book, reviewing journal articles, making scholarly presentations and working on five ongoing scholarly projects.
Distinguished Service - Dr. Mary Balcer, professor of biology, was honored for her work that includes teaching, directing the Lake Superior Research Institute, advising students, serving on faculty search committees and more. Janet Hanson, vice chancellor of administration and finance, was recognized for her work in handling challenging annual budgets ensuring award-winning campus building and renovation projects are completed on time.
Classified Staff Performance - Sandy Orr, academic department associate for the Department of Natural Sciences, was honored for purchasing expensive lab supplies and handling hundreds of job applications in addition to serving students and the public.
Academic Staff Award for Excellence - Tom Fennessey, director of facilities management, was recognized for his work in campus renovation and construction projects and ongoing maintenance work as well as his contributions to campus governance and alumni activities.
Distinguished Creativity - Dr. Tony Bukoski, professor of English, was honored for the numerous award-winning short stories and books chronicling Polish-American life in the Upper Midwest that he has produced over the years. Barton Sutter, senior lecturer of English, was honored for his award-winning work as poet, author and playwright.
Making Excellence Inclusive - Ivy Vainio and Acacia Nikoi of the Multicultural Affairs Office were recognized for their work to increase recruitment and retention of students of color by implementing new and expanded programs in their office.
Academic Service-Learning - Dr. Gary Keveles, professor of criminal justice, was honored for his three years of working promoting academic service-learning and weaving it into the fabric of the campus culture.
Outstanding Academic Advisor - Dr. Martha Einerson, professor of speech, was recognized for her dedication and commitment to the students she advises.
Max H. Lavine Award for Scholarly Contributions to Contemporary Concerns - Dr. Maria Cuzzo, professor of legal studies, was honored for the book chapter she wrote titled "Organizational Culture Change and Transformative Principles: Changing a Prison Based on Empowerment and Recognition Principles" that was published in the nationally reviewed "Transformative Mediation: Resources for Conflict Intervention Practitioners and Programs."
