Two University of Wisconsin-Superior economists and two students majoring in economics will present research papers at the Wisconsin Economics Association annual conference.

The Wisconsin Economics Association is a non-profit organization that seeks to advance economic knowledge and the economics profession along with maintaining a strong network among economists in Wisconsin and the Midwest. The organization is holding its annual conference Nov. 4-5 in Stevens Point, Wis.

UW-Superior faculty members who will present research papers are:

  • Dr. Zamira Simkins, assistant professor of economics in the Department of Business and Economics, and her collaborator Walter Park on "Demographic Trends, EU Enlargement, and Economic Growth."

  • Shawn Osell, senior lecturer in economics, on "The Antebellum Heights Conundrum."

UW-Superior students presenting research papers are:

  • Raneé Soeder, an economics major from Minnetonka, Minn., will present her undergraduate research paper titled "The Sustainability of the Agricultural Sector in India: Home Economy vs. Modern Economy."

  • Jeremy Syrjanen, an economics major from Esko, Minn., will present his undergraduate research paper titled "Economic Growth and Higher Education Spending."

In addition, UW-Superior students Amarachi Okorigbo of Nigeria and Calvin Wing of Hudson, Wis., are attending the conference. Both are majoring in economics.

The Wisconsin Economics Association holds its annual conference for members to exchange ideas, present research and foster collaboration. Conference presentations include professional and faculty research presentations as well as student research presentations.

Last year, UW-Superior economics major Saroj Dhital presented his Senior Year Experience research paper at the conference. He is now pursuing a doctorate degree in economics at Washington University in St. Louis.
