The University of Wisconsin-Superior's Jim Dan Hill Library reopened Tuesday, Aug. 7, following the massive flood in June that damaged the building's lower level and destroyed thousands of books.

Library services had been offering in another campus building since the June 19-20 downpour that dropped 9 inches of rain on the region and flooded large areas of Superior. The library was among the worst hit of campus buildings, with eight feet of water on its lower level where many books were stored.

The library is again offering access to its collections located on the upper two floors, including its reference collection, popular literature collection, young adult literature collection and DVDs. Current periodicals and online access also are available.

Library Director Debra Nordgren said plans call for having the core of the book collection replaced by late September. Students returning to campus this fall will be able to access books with e-readers and through inter-library loan.

"Until we get all our materials back, we may need to borrow from other University of Wisconsin System schools. If students are unfamiliar with the process, our staff is happy to work them to get those materials ordered and delivered here," she said.

The library's lower level remains closed to the public while workers make repairs, paint, and install new shelving and furniture.

UW-Superior librarians are working with faculty members to rebuild the library collection.

"This is a good opportunity for us to make sure we have a collection that is vital to our curriculum," Nordgren said.

Jim Dan Hill Library summer hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and closed Friday, August 10 and 17.  Longer hours return August 27. For more information go to www.uwsuper.edu/library
