Jacket Java opens evening alcohol sales in Yellowjacket Union

For decades UW-Superior students, faculty and staff were able to relax and enjoy conversation at the end of the day at the beer bar on campus, next to the bowling alley in the old Rothwell Student Center. That tradition returns, minus the bowling alley and Rothwell, when Jacket Java starts serving beer and wine in the Yellowjacket Union, Monday August 26th.

UW-Superior joins several other UW System schools by offering beer and wine sales on campus. Bringing back campus alcohol sales was led by the student body, with the Student Government Association leading the charge. Throughout the course of last year, the SGA did research, surveyed the student body and held open forums to discuss the sale of beer and wine in the Yellowjacket Union. "This will bring an aspect of student culture and evening activities that this campus and students will benefit from" said Graham Garfield, student body president.

The alcohol sales will be managed and monitored by A'viands, the campus food service provider. Sales will include bottled beer and bottled wine during the academic year between the hours of 4:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. Restrictions to help monitor for responsible drinking include limiting sales to one bottle per purchase and providing a specific monitored space for consumption. Student Health and Counseling Services will have a heavy presence in the lounge area and will continue to provide information and educational materials on responsible drinking throughout the academic year.

Vice Chancellor of Campus Life and Dean of Students Vicki Hajewski stated "This is all about building community. We appreciate the opportunity to educate students on responsible drinking."
