When it comes to assisting and supporting veteran students at UW-Superior, the Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center not only excels but is earning regional and national recognition for those that served our country.
In March UW-Superior earned an Above and Beyond Award from Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense office, that announced 65 Wisconsin National Guard and Reserve members nominated their employers for the 2014 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. The Freedom Award is the Department of Defense's highest recognition for employers supporting employees serving in the Guard and Reserve. UW-Superior was one of nine employers to receive the Above and Beyond Award March 29th and 30 in Green Lake, WI.
In addition Carl Huber won an individual Patriot Award for his service to members of the National Guard and Reserve in recognition of extraordinary support of one of their employees - SSGT Leon Adrian - who serves in the Minnesota Army National Guard.
That presentation took place on campus at the Veteran and Non-Traditional Student Center on March 11. (see photo).
Huber was nominated for this prestigious national award by their employee, SGT Adrian, who is a member of the National Guard and assigned to the Crazy Troop, 1-94 CAV in Cloquet, MN. The Patriot Award is only presented to employers who not only hire Guard and Reserve members, but demonstrate superior support to the military employee and his/her family. The National Guard and Reserve Forces are the cornerstone of our national defense.Huber has provided outstanding support and cooperation and has exhibited a patriotic spirit which is reflected in the significance of being a recipient of the Patriot Award.
SGT Adrian writes, "Carl is the director of the Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center on the University of Wisconsin-Superior campus. His job focuses on ensuring that veterans receive the educational benefits and support they may need to complete their education. He regularly directs student-veterans to solutions to their problems. He extends this helpfulness to aiding Guardsmen who work for him and ensuring that our work schedules are not in conflict with National Guard commitments."
Adrian sees every day the difference that Huber and his staff are making on campus. "Further, he regularly schedules events such as Military Appreciation Day which recognize the contributions of Veterans, past and present. Additionally, he helps to raise awareness among students and staff members of the University by arranging for seminars on how the campus can become more 'Veteran-Friendly'. Finally, Carl has made great efforts to ensure that Guardsmen, Reservist that attend the University can access their GI Bill Benefits and move forward to accomplishing their academic goals."
As the 1.3 million members of the National Guard and Reserve continue to perform an increasing number of unique missions that require extraordinary actions on the part of everyday citizens, ESGR will continue to be the informational agency for the employers of citizen warriors. Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) is a Department of Defence agency established in 1972. The mission of ESGR is to gain and maintain employer support for Guard and Reserve service by recognizing outstanding support, increasing awareness of the law, and resolving conflicts through informal mediation. ESGR volunteers provide free education, consultation, and if necessary mediation for employers of Guard and Reserve employees.

Once again the University of Wisconsin-Superior has been named a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs magazine in recognition of the university's efforts to assist military veterans and their family members in completing a college education.
According to G.I Jobs, the ranking places UW-Superior in the top 15 percent of all colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide in services offered to veterans. It was the fourth straight year that the school has earned the award.
UW-Superior Chancellor Renée Wachter was pleased to once again earn the designation, she said, "The University of Wisconsin-Superior helped Armed Forces Veterans leverage their life experiences to obtain the best educational advantage by helping them get connected, navigate the system, learn and succeed."
G.I. Jobs is a private organization that surveys 7,000 schools nationwide about the services they provide to vete3rans and makes that information available through its magazine and website. To be named a Military Friendly School, a university is evaluated on such areas as flexibility in class scheduling and requirements, transferring academic credits, providing support for veterans, and academic accreditation.
VNSC and Douglas County will also be holding a Veterans Expo May 13 in the Yellowjacket Union to serve veteran students and veterans throughout the community in the Superior and Douglas County area. The event is free and open to the public and will showcase veteran outreach services in the area. The keynote speaker will be Secretary John Scocos of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs.
