Brittany Berning skates every shift at each hockey game she takes part in. She doesn't score, or take a penalty and often times is not even the most popular person on the ice.

But she has a job she loves. For the past nine seasons she has been a hockey referee and is now earning duties at national competitions for her work on the ice.

For this UW-Superior senior it is a passion she enjoys, she first started in 7th grade. "My dad is also a referee and he got me started officiating. I also played hockey through high school and officiating was another way to stay active in the sport while in high school and also now that I am out of high school and in college as well."

This isn't her only duty away from school work. She is also a member of the Residence Life staff as the Academic Resource Coordinator.

Berning worked the ACHA 2014 Women's Division I & II College Club National Tournament in Newark, Delaware last month. This week her duties will take her to Amherst, New York. She will take part in the USA Hockey 2014 Girl's hockey Tier II National Tournament April 2-6, 2014.

Berning is a Swenson scholar majoring in chemistry with a minor in math. The Litchfield, MN native has also officiated two USA youth state tournaments as well. This year she also worked high school hockey games and advanced as far as the section semifinals. Last summer she was also selected for the east regional USA officiating camp. In the future she would like to continue her passion working towards college and national officiating opportunities.

But for now, look for her soon at a rink near you-- embracing the sport she loves!
