As a student at UW-Superior, Johanna Kirk, Class of 2001 was a legal studies major and a member of the mock trial team. That experience with law kick-started a legal career that continues to this day.
This alumna is making an impact with clients in Superior, Douglas County and Northwestern Wisconsin with a different kind of approach to legal services.
In December 2013, Johanna R. Kirk opened a solo practice, Kirk Law Office, L.L.C. in Superior, Wis. The firm provides legal services to businesses, non-profits, and individuals in many areas of law. Kirk said, "My firm looks different than the traditional law office. There is no library full of books. There is no file storage room. I have chosen to go digital with these, and other aspects of my firm, because some of those traditional practices generate costs that just get passed on to clients." She said her goal is to continue providing clients with top-notch legal services while incorporating new methods of structuring the attorney-client relationship and alternative billing systems.
The UW-Superior Alumni Association recently established the Young Alumni Achievement Award to honor alumni that have graduated within the past 15 years, and whose success serves as an inspiration for current and prospective students. Joanna Kirk was the first to earn the award. She was hired by Knudson, Torvinen, and Jones in 2006, after graduating from the Hamline School of Law in St. Paul, Minn. In January 2010 she was named a partner in the firm.
"My passion for the law comes from a never-ending desire to learn and help people. All clients-businesses and individuals- are looking for realistic, down-to-earth, practical and cost effective legal advice and services . I strive to create long-term relationships with my clients that go beyond just being their lawyer," said Kirk.
In 2010, Johanna was named one of the Wisconsin Law Journal's "Up and Coming Lawyers of 2010". The honor recognizes young attorneys throughout the state who are doing exceptional work. Johanna was chosen in part because of her successful appellate work and her volunteer service to the state and local bar associations.
She continues to be connected with the community by volunteering on several board of directors and committees. "I have many friends who have become clients and even more clients who have become my friends. The Superior and Douglas County area makes this so easy because the people here appreciate genuine relationships and the quality of work that I provide."
This hockey mom is married to Steve Kirk (Class of 2001), assistant director of Campus Recreation at UW-Superior.
