With students, community members, fellow educators, and university leaders from across the state looking on, Dr. Renée Wachter was inaugurated Thursday, April 12, as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
The ceremony entrusts Wachter with the responsibility of celebrating UW-Superior's campus' historical traditions, cultivating its relationships with the community, and developing and implementing a vision for the next generation of faculty, staff, and students, said Kevin P. Reilly, president of the University of Wisconsin System.
Wachter joined the campus community on July 1, 2011. Thursday's inauguration is a tradition that marks her formal investiture in the university's top leadership position. The ceremony, attended by about 400 people, capped a special week of campus events and coincided with the UW System Board of Regents holding its regular meeting at UW-Superior.
In her inauguration address, Wachter said UW-Superior must position itself to meet the rapid changes brought by the "knowledge and innovation economy," information technology and declining state funding for higher education.
"UW-Superior is positioned to succeed," she said. "The legacy of those coming before us is that they have built an enduring core from which we can draw strength, build excellence, and use it to take control of the forces around us."
Wachter said the university and its faculty must remain "true to our core" of graduating well-prepared students, while adopting new technologies in learning and embracing new partnerships with educational and community partners.
She also called upon the campus community to "broaden our scope on campus, to embrace forms of scholarship and creative activity unique to our disciplines in ways where we can work together to solve the most entangled of problems in our society and, importantly, to build this activity into the regular way in which we operate…"
Wachter is UW-Superior's 12th chancellor. The position's title was president from the school's opening in 1896 until 1972, when it was changed to chancellor after UW-Superior became part of the University of Wisconsin System.
Prior to her arrival at UW-Superior, Wachter served as the founding dean of the School of Business at Truman State University in Missouri. She holds a doctorate degree from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business with emphasis in management information systems, marketing and statistics.
UW-Superior engages students for lifelong learning and rewarding careers through more than 26 undergraduate and graduate programs offered on campus along with degrees offered through distance learning. The university is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges and plays a central role in the
