Eight to represent UW-Superior at statewide research showcase

Eight University of Wisconsin-Superior students involved in the university's computer science, biology, and transportation and logistics management programs have been chosen to showcase their undergraduate research projects at the State Capitol in Madison.

"Posters in the Rotunda: A Celebration of Undergraduate Research," will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 6. The event brings students and faculty from University of Wisconsin System campuses to the State Capitol Rotunda to share findings from undergraduate research projects with state elected officials, government representatives, and the public.

UW-Superior students presenting research include:

  • Daniel Fuller, a biology major from Sarona, Wis., and Cole Holstrom, a biology and chemistry major from Virginia, Minn., presenting "Urban Stream Contamination: Evaluating sources of pollution through the comparisons of local area streams." Their faculty advisor is Dr. William Bajjali, professor of hydrogeology and geographic information systems.

  • Jerad DeVries, amathematics and computer science major from Esko, Minn., presenting "Isoperimetric Problems on Regular Graphs." His faculty advisor is Dr. Serguei Bezroukov, professor of mathematics and computer science.

  • Jacob Kantonen, a computer science major from Moose Lake, Minn., presenting "LED Scrolling Display." His faculty advisor is Dr. Serguei Bezroukov, professor of mathematics and computer science.

  • Alan Siers, a transportation and logistics management major from Duluth, presenting "Improving Log Transportation with Data-Based Monitoring and Analysis in Northern Wisconsin and Upper Peninsula of Michigan. His faculty advisor is Dr. Richard Stewart, professor of transportation and logistics.

  • Scott Byykkonen of Duluth, Joshua Larson of Monticello, Minn., Ashley Puhek of Hibbing, Minn., and Alan Siers of Duluth, all majoring in transportation and logistics management, presenting "Bayfield County, Wisconsin, Unofficial Park and Ride Lots Inventory and User Survey." Their faculty advisor is Dr. Richard Stewart, professor of transportation and logistics.

During the event, state leaders will have the opportunity to view poster presentations of the research projects, speak with students and faculty members, and learn more about how this experience enriches the educational experience.
