Gail Trombley of Superior has been chosen to receive the 2012 Outstanding Woman of Color in Education Award at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

Trombley will represent UW-Superior at the University of Wisconsin System's Women of Color Award Ceremony on April 23. Each UW System campus selects one woman to receive this recognition each academic year.

Trombley is completing two majors – one in communicating arts and an individually designed major in health and social service studies. She expects to graduate in May.

"I have been humbled by receiving this award," she  said. "To think that people thought enough of me to nominate me alone was enough for my spirit, but to have actually received it is beyond belief."

Trombley works in Superior as a housing counselor and advocate to help clients in crises. She assisted in opening the first homeless shelter in Superior. She often works with homeless women of color who are on the verge of homelessness and is an advocate of Anishinaabe culture and education.  

"It is our great pleasure to nominate Gail for her work in the areas of women's studies scholarship and activism, especially for her service to improve the status and climate for women of color," said Dr. Merose Hwang, assistant professor of history and chair of the award committee.

UW-Superior engages students for lifelong learning and rewarding careers through more than 26 undergraduate and graduate programs offered on campus along with degrees offered through distance learning. The university is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges and plays a central role in the University of Wisconsin System's Growth Agenda for Wisconsin.
