A University of Wisconsin-Superior student and a student intern from another university have earned national journalism awards from the Public Radio News Directors Institute for their reporting for KUWS-FM.
The awards were announced June 26 at the Public Radio News Directors Institute Conference held in Louisville, Ky. This is the first time KUWS reporters have won awards in the PRNDI competition, which features top student reporters for public radio stations across the country.
UW-Superior student Rich Kremer earned a first place award in the features category for his report, "Copper Creek Motorway" and a second place award in the Spot News category for his report, "Sex assault awareness." Kremer graduated in May with a major in Communicating Arts-Journalism Concentration and is now news director for a group of radio stations in Shawano, Wis.
KUWS intern Catherine Hannula earned a first place award in the Spot News category for her report, "Salazar Inspects Apostles." Hannula, a Superior resident attending Mount Holyoke, worked as a reporting intern at KUWS in 2008 and 2009.
