Kym Young, an energetic mentor, volunteer and activist in the Twin Ports and on the University of Wisconsin-Superior campus, received the 2010-2011 Community Diversity Award at UW-Superior.
The Community Diversity Award is presented each year by UW-Superior's Office of Multicultural Affairs to a person in the Twin Ports who is connected to the university and who works diligently to enhance the lives of persons of color in the region.
Young is pursuing a master of arts degree in visual arts at UW-Superior. On campus, her activities have included successfully completing the McNair Scholars Program, helping raises funds for earthquake victims in Haiti and Japan, serving as president of the Black Student Union, and coordinating the Solidarity Against Hate campaign after a racial incident at another local university.
In the community, her work includes mentoring high school students, volunteering with the Women's Coalition in Duluth, and serving as an ambassador with the Victory over Violence organization. She also coordinated a book drive that gathered more than 300 books for a local high school library.
UW-Superior engages students for lifelong learning and rewarding careers through more than 26 undergraduate and graduate programs offered on campus along with degrees offered through distance learning.
