Mock Trial team earns honors at national championship

Posted on Apr 19, 2010
UW-Superior's Mock Trial team earns honors competing against much larger universities at the American Mock Trial national championship tournament.

The University of Wisconsin-Superior Mock Trial team earned a 12th place Honorable Mention Award in its division and two team members earned individual national awards at the American Mock Trial 26th Annual National Championship Tournament last weekend in Memphis.

The American Mock Trial Association has more than 350 participating universities. This year's national competition began with 650 university undergraduate teams that were narrowed to a final field of the best 48 teams. UW-Superior finished in the top bracket at this "best of the best" national tournament.

This year's case facing the teams was a criminal murder trial. UW-Superior's team won ballots from teams from the University of Notre Dame and Loyola University of Chicago to earn its award.

Other universities in the division included Gonzaga University, University of Texas, University of California-Irvine, Miami University, University of Pennsylvania, Harvard, University of Michigan, Lake Forest College, University of Rochester, Brown University, Duke University, Dickinson College, Tufts University, St. Olaf College and University of Iowa.

As part of the competition, UW-Superior students Eric Albertson of Duluth won All-American Attorney as a nationally distinguished advocate, and Christine Eidmann of Herbstein, Germany, won All-American Witness as a nationally distinguished witness. They join an elite group of 20 undergraduates nationwide in the division.

In addition to Albertson and Eidmann, team members include George Zuchowski of Foxboro, Wis., Caleb Nicholson of Mellen, Wis., Alicia Kline of Reedsburg, Wis., Lela Akiashvili of Georgia, Kayannda Davis of Hudson, Wis., Katlyn Shipley of Duluth, Cassanda Foltz of Detroit Lakes, Minn., and Taylor Tengwall of Sandstone, Minn.

The team is coached by Dr. Maria Stalzer Wyant Cuzzo, academic coach; Tracy Schramm, partner in Reyelts, Bateman and Schramm, attorney coach; and Mary Russell assistant coach.

Mock Trial is an academic forensic activity that teaches students how to analyze the law and facts of a case, and to argue and present cases in a trial court. Many of the participating students are majoring in UW-Superior's Legal Studies or Criminal Justice programs. UW-Superior belongs to the American Mock Trial Association and is one of more than 350 universities in the country that take part in mock trial competition.
