Five people -some familiar to campus and some new-join the University of Wisconsin-Superior faculty for the Fall 2013 semester.
Dr. Faith Hensrud, vice chancellor for academic affairs, said new faculty members contribute to the vitality of the university. "We look forward to their contributions as we continue to provide engaging educational experiences for our students."
New faculty members include:
Dr. Rubana Mahjabeen-assistant professor of economics -Dr. Rubana Mahjabeen holds a doctoral degree in economics from the University of Kansas. She also earned a master's degree from Texas A&M University with a Fulbright Scholarship from there. She also holds an undergraduate and master's degree from Dhaka University in Bangladesh. She also has a background in global economic development. She is thrilled to be at in Superior. "I'm excited to work at UW-Superior because of its liberal arts tradition which respects diverse cultures."
Dr. Brent Opall-assistant professor of management-Dr. Opall is no newcomer to UW-Superior. He earned his undergraduate degree from UW-Superior in 1999. He earned his master's degree from Bowling Green State University and earned his doctorate degree in philosophy from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Dr. Opall served two consecutive terms on the UW-Superior's Alumni Association National Board of Directors. He is also eager to be back here in Superior. "I am excited to work at UW-Superior because it is a small campus with small classes, giving me the opportunity to truly know our students, plus it's my alma mater."
Dr. Maryjane Burdge-- assistant professor --special education-Joins the educational leadership department. She earned her doctorate degree from Walden University. She is no stranger to the UW System either, having earned her master's degree at UW-Whitewater and her undergraduate degree from Rider College. Dr. Burdge enjoys each and every day here. "Working at UWS gives me the opportunity to shape the next generation of teachers; a new way to contribute to the profession; and the ability to stay young. I love coming to work here every day."
Dr. Xiaofeng Gu- assistant professor mathematics - Joins the math and computer science department. He earned his doctorate degree in mathematics at West Virginia University, concentrated on discrete math, including graph theory and combinatorics. Dr. Gu loves this area and being at UW-Superior. "I am most looking forward to the fall in Superior."
Dr. Cheong Soon Gan- assistant professor of history -Joins the social inquiry department. He earned his undergraduate degree in english and his doctorate at U.C. Berkeley. Prior to joining UW-Superior he was teaching at Union College, and at one point in his career for about a decade was a newspaper journalist. Dr. Gan is happy to part of the staff here. "I am excitied of the challenge of working with the students from a diverse socio-economic background and bringing the benefits of a liberal arts education to them."
UW-Superior engages students for lifelong learning and rewarding careers through more than 30 undergraduate and graduate programs offered on campus along with degrees offered through distance learning. The university is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges and plays a central role in the University of Wisconsin System's Growth Agenda for Wisconsin.
