Pink treadmill raises money to fight cancer

Posted on Oct 3, 2011
Students, staff and faculty logged 894 miles in October on the pink CYBEX treadmill to raise money to fight cancer.

Nov. 1 Update: Students, staff and faculty logged 894 miles last month on the new pink CYBEX treadmill in the Marcovich Wellness Center.

Including a check from a retired faculty member (he was physically unable to use the treadmill but wanted to support the cause), a donation of $109.40 will be made to the Breast Cancer Foundation in the university's name.

Those deserving special recognition include the UW-Superior Athletic Department, where students and staff ran more than 100 miles, and the Campus Life Office, where students and staff ran more than 60 miles on the machine.

The new treadmill in UW-Superior's Marcovich Wellness Center stands out for a couple of reasons.

Amid a sea of white and grey fitness machines, it's the only one that's pink. It's also the only machine that raises money to fight breast cancer.

UW-Superior's Campus Recreation program bought the pink CYBEX treadmill as part of the manufacturer's annual promotion for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During October, CYBEX will donate 10 cents to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for every mile logged on the machine.

"This is a wonderful learning experience for students and it supports a great cause," said Krisi Patterson, assistant director of campus recreation. "We're working with Yellowjacket athletics, the community, our general student population, student organizations and any other group that wants to help support this. My goal is to have the pink treadmill be the choice piece of equipment to use during the month of October."

Cancer survivor and university employee Carmen Britton inaugurated the treadmill on Sept. 30 by walking the first mile.

Marcovich Wellness Center staff will promote use of the treadmill by Yellowjacket athletic teams and other groups throughout the month to raise money. Campus Recreation, Student Health and Counseling and the student organization Colleges Against Cancer are working together on the fund-raising effort.
