The 118th Commencement at the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday will feature a special visit and speech from UW System President Ray Cross. President Cross was recently appointment as the seventh president of the University of Wisconsin System on February 15, 2014.
"We are thrilled President Cross accepted our offer to speak at commencement," said Chancellor Renee Wachter. "Commencement, along with its aura of accomplishment, pride, and the final reward is a great day for us to showcase our campus. He is an engaging speaker and wise man who will leave a lasting impression on our graduates and campus community."
President Cross has visited campus before in his previous role as chancellor of UW Colleges and UW-Extension. His most recent visit was in April 2012 when UW-Superior hosted the board of regents meeting. The newly appointed president also spent time with each of the seven UW-Superior student researchers at the UW System Posters in the Rotunda program March 12 in Madison.
When it comes to connecting students, faculty, and staff to achievement on campus and the community Ray Cross has been, and will continue to be a leader in educational opportunities. He has built a career of innovative success by forging partnerships no matter where his talents have taken him.
Cross is no stranger to higher education in the state of Wisconsin.
In his prior position as Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin Colleges and the University of Wisconsin-Extension he was instrumental in the development of the new UW-Flexible Option program.
Before coming to Wisconsin, Cross served as president of Morrisville State College within the State University of New York (SUNY). He has also served as president of Northwest Technical College in Bemidji, Minn., and was a department head and a professor at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich.
In addition to his career in academia, Cross has experience in the private sector as a design engineer, small-business owner and consultant to business, industry and government. From 1967-70, Cross served with the U.S. Army and was awarded four medals for his service in Vietnam.
Cross earned his Ph.D. at Michigan State University in 1991 and his M.S. at Central Michigan University in 1981 and his B.S. degree from Ferris State University in 1978. He is married, has four children and five grandchildren.
The UW System is focused on providing Wisconsin with world-class education, research and public service. We are growing Wisconsin's knowledge economy by helping more state residents earn college degrees, and we are committed to opening the doors of the university to talented students from families across Wisconsin, regardless of background.
One of my primary responsibilities is listening to, and building lasting relationships with, the people and organizations that sustain us. With the support -- and the voices -- of everyone in the university and broader community, we can demonstrate our value, our role, and our impact in educating students and stimulating economic prosperity in Wisconsin.
