Res Halls to host traveling reference desk

Posted on Sep 5, 2012
Students living in the residence halls can get help on research when JDH Library's reference librarians pay a visit. They'll be in CMO on Sept. 13.

Reference librarians at Jim Dan Hill Library are taking their show - and their knowledge - on the road this fall by setting up shop in a different residence hall every Thursday afternoon.

Carolyn Caffrey Gardner and Kristen Lindquist will use laptops and iPads to operate a mobile reference desk from 4 to 6 p.m. each Thursday. They started in Crownhart Hall.

On Thursday, Sept. 13, the pair will work in Curran,McNeill-Ostrander Hall, and the following week they will be in Ross Hall. They'll repeat that cycle throughout the semester.

Students will find them sitting next to the "Information Desk - Ask Here" sign in the lobby.

Gardner said the librarians will work one-on-one with any students who ask for help. Using electronic resources, they can assist most students on the spot.

"Most of the reference questions we get tend to center around scholarly journals and how to find articles on a particular topic, and those are accessed electronically through databases. We have thousands if not millions of journal articles that we can access," Gardner said.

"We also can teach students how to refine their online searches so they can do research for future work," she added. "We do a lot of work with the planning process when it comes to research, along with showing students how to retrieve those materials and then how to cite those sources."

And if the quest for knowledge is not sufficient to draw students to the traveling reference desk, every student visitor will receive "Library Loot Study Bucks" that can be redeemed for snacks, courtesy of the Residence Life Office.

Residence Life requested the library bring reference services to the residence halls, and Gardner said the staff at Jim Dan HillLibrary is happy to help.

"This is extending the library across the campus, but we're also inviting them back to the library," she said. "This is a way to put a familiar face on the library as well as to provide great service."
