Students earn broadcast news awards

University of Wisconsin-Superior students who report news for KUWS-FM 91.3 recently took home nine awards from the Northwest Broadcast News Association and four from the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association.

At a recent awards ceremony held by the Northwest Broadcast News Association, KUWS reporters received six first-place reporting awards and three merit awards. The competition covered radio stations in six states in the Upper Midwest.

           Awards and students who received them include:

  • Audio – First Place Award to Laura Podgornik for "Sled Dog Psyche." Podgornik, who lives in Proctor, Minn., will graduate from UW-Superior in May.

  • Audio – Merit Award to Laura Podgornik for "Tall Ships Armada."

  • Broadcast Writing – First Place Award to Joe Cadotte for "Saving the Written Word." Cadotte is a UW-Superior senior from Duluth.

  • Documentary/Special – First Place Award to Rich Kremer for "Housing Crash Hits." Kremer, a native of Superior, graduated in 2010 is now a Wisconsin Public Radioreporter in Eau Claire.

  • Hard Feature – First Place Award to Joe Cadotte for "Online Sex Predators."

  • Hard Feature – Merit Award to Joe Cadotte for "Sandy Lake Memorial."

  • Newscast – First Place Award to Laura Podgornik for the "News at 9" broadcast on Nov. 10, 2010.

  • Series – First Place Award to Laura Podgornik for "Anonymous Sexual-Assault Reporting."

  • Series – Merit Award to Laura Podgornik for "Superior Triple Homicide."

At a recent awards ceremony held by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association, collegiate radio newsawards and the UW-Superior students who received them include:

  • Newscast – First Place Award to Laura Podgornik for "News at 9" broadcast.
     
  • News/Documentary – First Place Awardto Rich Kremer for "Home Foreclosures: Just a Memory."

  • News/Documentary – Second Place Award to Laura Podgornik and Brittany Berrens for "Anonymous Reporting Sexual Assault Policy."

  • News Story – Second Place Award to Laura Podgornik for "Tall Ships Armada."

KUWS is a Wisconsin Public Radio affiliate located at the University of Wisconsin–Superior. Many UW–Superior students work at the station as a co–curricular activity of the university's Communicating Arts Department.
