Posted on Apr 26, 2010
Two KUWS journalists and News Director Mike Simonson won reporting awards April 24 from the Milwaukee Press Club.

Two University of Wisconsin-Superior students who report news for KUWS-FM 91.3 and the KUWS news director have received radio news awards from the Milwaukee Press Club.

The students earned the awards through the club's Excellence in Wisconsin Journalism Competition. The competition was judged by professional journalists and journalism scholars from across the country. The students received their awards at the Milwaukee Press Club's 2010 Gridiron Awards Dinner on April 24 in Milwaukee.

Awards and students who received them include:

Radio: Best Newscast: First place to Joe Cadotte for KUWS Morning News.

Radio: Best Sports Story: First place to Rich Kremer for "Copper Creek Motorsports."

In the professional categories, KUWS News Director Mike Simonson earned a first place award for "Best Use of Audio Within a Report" for his report titled "Astronaut Jeffrey Williams Blasts Off." It was one of six stories Simonson filed from Kazakhstan and Moscow last fall as Williams, a Winter, Wis., native and NASA astronaut, rode a Russian rocket to the International Space Station.
