The UW-Superior Triathlon Team was officially recognized as an on-campus organization on November 13, 2013 and was started by now student President Jacob Braaten, who also competes with the team.
The purpose of the club, advised by admissions staff member Amanda Akason, is to promote a healthy lifestyle for those on campus through physical fitness, teamwork and healthy dietary habits. After competing in triathlons, Braaten and friends discovered the collegiate competitions that currently exist for triathlons. They then decided to put together the club for other students with similar interests and who also wanted to compete at the collegiate level.
Braaten describes the club as being open to everyone. "The team is set up to allow each individual to commit to what they feel comfortable with." Training sessions and schedules have been set up for experienced and inexperienced athletes to help better accommodate both with the difficult processes of training itself, and busy schedules. Derek Krivinchuk, who joined the team for a new athletic challenge in addition to his love of running, also applauds the promotion of health that the club brings and adds, "I like the camaraderie that can form between like-minded athletes. It also is a great chance for people to make new connections with students from other universities who share their passion."
The group competed in its' first ever meet mid-January at Iowa State University. Upon placing, the team snagged a spot for the Collegiate National competition in Arizona this April. Team members who will be attending nationals are: Jacob Braaten, Lee Brown, Mieszko Brikis, Brittney Kemi and Derek Krivinchuk. Other team members include: Sally Linzmeier and John Maginot.
USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships on April 4-5, which will once again be hosted in Tempe, Ariz., near the Arizona State University campus. Collegiate clubs will have athletes represented in three championship races: a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike, 5-kilometer draft-legal sprint, the traditional 1,500m swim, 36k bike, 10k run championship and the four-person Mixed Team Relay, in which athletes will complete a 250m swim, 5k bike and 1.2k run
