TRIO programs honor students and tutors

Outstanding students and tutors in University of Wisconsin-Superior student support programs were honored April 15 at the university's annual TRIO Award Day.

TRIO programs at UW-Superior provide qualified students with the necessary assistance to achieve their educational goals. They include Student Support Services, which provides tutoring and assistance to qualifying students; Upward Bound, which helps Superior high school students prepare for college; and the McNair Scholars program, which prepares first-generation college students and students from under-represented groups for graduate study.

Those receiving awards this year include:

Outstanding Tutor -- Academic Support Center - Bobbie Lamaere is a graduate student completing her first year as a tutor in the center. She was recognized for demonstrating patience, understanding and commitment  in working with students.

Outstanding Student -- Academic Support Center - Yasmin Ahmad is majoring in exercise science. She has used the center's resources to study, work on class assignments, get assistance with her class work, and improve her study habits and skills.

Outstanding Tutors -- Mathematics Lab

  • Josh Hudspith has tutored at the lab for three years and is recognized for his skill in explaining mathematical concepts to students and his approachable demeanor. He is majoring in mathematics education.
     
  • Diwash Shrestha has tutored at the lab for three and one-half years and is noted for his positive attitude, helping with work-related tasks and interacting with students and staff. He is majoring in mathematics and economics.

Outstanding Student - Mathematics Lab - Chad Kromrey is noted for his patience and positive attitude. He's also willing to help other students who have questions. He is majoring in mathematics and minoring in Chinese.

Outstanding Scholar of the Year - McNair Scholars Program - Jerad DeVries of Esko, Minn., is a mathematics major who combined work in math and computer science on his research project titled "Isoparimetric Problems on Graphs and Posets."  He also works as a math tutor.

Upward Bound Tutor and Mentor of the Year - William Moon of Poplar, Wis., who graduated from UW-Superior with a major in art education.

UW-Superior Foundation Gulland Scholarship Recipient - Kristine Polkoski of Superior, who currently is a sophomore at UW-Superior.

Upward Bound Student of the Year - Halee Kirkwood of Superior High School.
