SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Outstanding students and tutors in the University of Wisconsin-Superior student support programs will be honored April 5 at the university's annual TRiO Award Day.
TRiO programs at UW-Superior provide qualified students with the necessary assistance to achieve their educational goals. They include Student Support Services, which provides tutoring and assistance to qualifying students; Upward Bound, which helps Superior High School students prepare for college; and the McNair Scholars program, which prepares first-generation college students and students from under-represented groups for graduate study.
Those receiving awards this year include:
Academic Support Center Tutors of the Year: Amar Gurung, a chemistry major from Kathmandu, Nepal; Mark Adam Jersett, a chemistry major from Lake Nebagamon, Wis., and Michael Schultz, a chemistry and biology major from Duluth, Minn., are being recognized for their efforts over the past few years in working with chemistry students. Gurung, Jersett, and Schultz each have unique abilities required to help students understand the complexities of the subject in a relaxed and comfortable manner.
Academic Support Center Student of the Year: Genevieve Martin, a legal studies major from Duluth, Minn., is being recognized for the numerous hours she has spent in the Academic Support Center and for her dedication to her academic success.
Math Lab Tutor of the Year: Elizabeth Reichert is a senior majoring in Elementary Education from Superior, Wis.
Math Lab Student of the Year: Alexander Tappe from Warroad, Minn. is majoring in Mathematics.
McNair Scholars Program Scholar of the Year: Michelle Stricker, a sociology major from Highbridge, Wis., completed research titled "The Effects of Mentoring Programs on At-Risk Youth: A Look into the GEARS Mentoring Program in Superior, WI." She is being recognized due to her dedication to her research, in particular during the summer program.
McNair Scholars Program Scholar of the Year: Stanly Granger, an exercise science major from Duluth, completed a project titled "Proprioception and Human Balance" and is being recognized due to his key organizational skills and his dedication to his research.
Upward Bound Tutor of the Year: Emily Johnson, a junior majoring in mathematics from Wausau, Wis., is cited for her willingness to take on tasks and for her support of Upward Bound students in their educational goals and personal relationships.
Upward Bound Student of the Year: Dayelle Davis is a student at the Superior High School and plans to attend the University of Iowa. She is cited for the way she plans ahead, for her decision making skills, and for her initiative.
UW-Superior Foundation Gulland Scholarship Recipient: Kristine Polkoski, a junior majoring in psychology from Superior, is being recognized for her commitment to her education and for her openness to better herself by taking advantage of the resources available. She plans on attending graduate school to become a school counselor.
TRiO Achiever Award for Outstanding Faculty and Staff: Jill Laughlin, Grants Accountant in the Business Office, is being honored for her work on several occasions helping Student Support Services with grant monies.
