UW-Superior graduate earns Fulbright Scholarship

Jena Engelking of Superior, Wis. has earned a Fulbright Scholarship.

The 2007 graduate of Superior High School is also a 2013 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Superior where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in political science.

Engelking has been selected for a 2014-15 Fulbright U.S. Student Award to Bosnia and Herzegovina.  She will be representing her county as a cultural ambassador while overseas, helping to enhance mutual understanding between Americans and the residents of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Cherie Sawinski, interim director of Office of International Programs at UW-Superior was thrilled for this UW-Superior graduate.  "We are so proud to hear the wonderful news.  We hope this opportunity will prove to be a springboard to bring her closer to her career goal of working with the U.S. Foreign Services."

Since the program started in 1948 over 100,000 Fulbright U.S. Student Program alumni have been involved in international relations all over the world according to Daniel Kramer, director of U.S. Student Programs.

Sawinski said Engelking's dedication and ambition helped her achieve this goal.  "To the best of my knowledge, she is the first former student, at least in recent years, to receive a Fulbright.  In addition to her many fine leadership qualities, it's also a testament to the experience she had in the War & Peace in Bosnia Program led by Haji Dokhanchi and Karl Bahm."

Engelking was involved with many clubs and organizations while at UW-Superior and made a trip to Washington, D.C. with a UW-Superior student group during spring break 2013.   She was one of eight students with the Political Science Association that met with area congressional lawmakers on the trip and also toured the Supreme Court, U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, State Department and the Pentagon.
