Wisconsin Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense office, announced that the University of Wisconsin-Superior was honored with an Above and Beyond Award in recognition of extraordinary support of its employees who serve in the Wisconsin Guard and Reserve. The state committee hosted an employer awards banquet at the Heidel House in Green Lake to bestow this honor.

According to Mike Williams, Wisconsin ESGR State Chair, "The ESGR Above and Beyond Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize American employers providing extraordinary patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation's call to serve. Supportive employers are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation's Guard and Reserve units."

UW-Superior joins with thousands of American employers who have reviewed and amended their current human resources policies to ensure compliance with the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act. Many employers provide above and beyond support with pay differential to offset the loss of wages, and extension of health care benefits which complement coverage provided by the military when their employees are mobilized.

First Lieutenant Jessica Boettcher has thirteen years of military service and is a nontraditional student advisor at the university and nominated her employer for the award. "Itis a privilege to serve in the United States Armed Forces; and to work for a company, such as UW-Superior that supports this passion is truly an honor. Everyone that serves should have this same honor." For the fourth year in a row, UW-Superior was named a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs Magazine in recognition of the university's efforts to assist military veterans and their family members in completing a college education. According to G.I Jobs, the ranking places UW-Superior in the top 15 percent of all colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide in services offered to veterans.

As the 1.3 million members of the National Guard and Reserve perform an increasing number of unique missions within America's borders and beyond, ESGR will continue to be the resource for the employers of citizen warriors. ESGR recognizes outstanding support, increases awareness of the law, and resolves conflict through mediation.
