Tuesday evening UW-Superior department of music hosted "The Transforming Powers of Music". The UW-Superior Symphonic Band performed works including: the Florentiner March by Julius Fucik of Prague, Themes from Green Bushes by Australian composer Percy Grainger and two works by American composer Scott McAllister, Gone and One Time at Band Camp. The Chamber Wind Ensemble performed a movement from Suite in D by American composer Arthur Bird. The Full Brass Jackets played a minuet from Music for the Royal Fireworks by George Frideric Handel.
The event, under conductor Pamela Bowen Bustos, featured Student Conductor Matthew Booth. Booth is a junior at UW-Superior, where he is pursuing a degree in Instrumental Music Education. As a graduate of Spring Lake Park High School in Spring Lake Park, Minnesota, in 2013, Matthew was one of the winners of the UW-Superior Orchestra Concerto competition. He is also an active performer in the community, currently serving as the bass trombonist for the Mesabi Symphony Orchestra. Booth has also performed with the North Shore Philharmonic Orchestra, Itasca Symphony, and the Full Brass Jackets brass quintet. Outside of school, Booth works as an EMT for Lake County Ambulance and teaches a private low brass studio.
Booth, current head UW-Superior band librarian and president of the Collegiate National Association for Music Education (CNAFME) student organization, said he was excited for the emotional performance in the Thorpe Langley Auditorium Tuesday evening. "I was excited to be on the podium, it was my first time in front of a band and the piece I conducted is wonderful." In addition to conducting, Booth also performed with the Symphonic Band and Full Brass Jackets Quintet in the evening's performance.
