Broadcasting entrepreneur Tony Hernandez, Chamber of Commerce President Dave Minor, financial executive Paul Buckley, and economics professor Dr. Bob Beam were presented achievement awards recently by the University of Wisconsin-Superior Alumni Association.

The awards were presented Sept. 16 during the annual Donor Recognition Reception held by the UW-Superior Foundation and UW-Superior Alumni Association.

Hernandez, Class of 1984, was presented with the Distinguished Alumnus Award. The award recognizes a graduate of the university whose success serves as an inspiration for current and prospective students.

Hernandez was born in Cuba and came to the United States as a child with his parents as political refugees. Today he is co-founder, president and chief executive officer of the Latino Broadcasting Company, which produces, distributes and markets nationally syndicated Hispanic music programs, celebrity features, and sports programs to radio stations and provides content to multiple websites. He also is co-founder and executive producer of the Immigrant Archive Project, the first non-profit, comprehensive digital history project on Latino immigrants in the United States.

Each year the Alumni Association recognizes a person who is not an alumnus of UW-Superior, but whose success serves as an inspiration for current and prospective students. The association presented its Honorary Alumnus Award to Minor in recognition of his diligent work over the years to build the relationship between the business community and UW-Superior.

Buckley was presented with the Edward and Betty Kossak Service Award, which honors those who have made significant contributions in time, energy, leadership and support to further the goals of UW-Superior. Buckley is employed at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney as First Vice President and Resident Manager. He has assisted UW-Superior by volunteering many hours to share his business expertise with students, hired UW-Superior students as interns, helped support a student scholarship and more.

Beam was presented the James Rainaldo Mentor Award, which recognizes a UW-Superior faculty or staff member who has touched the lives of current and former students in a unique and significant way. Since joining the faculty in 1980, Beam has become a favorite professor of hundreds of students, known for his patience and ability to explain complex economic matters in an easily understandable manner.
