The UW-Superior men's soccer team was recognized by Chancellor Renée Wachter and Athletic Director Steve Nelson in the MWC Wednesday, Nov. 20 after a record setting season and their first ever WIAC championship. They were both proud of the team and had high praise for their accomplishments this year.

Led by their six seniors, the Yellowjackets finished the year with a 12-6-3 tally, the best in the team's history, with only one loss at home. In conference play they were 2-1-1. Their season concluded by knocking off WIAC leader UW-Oshkosh to win the conference title.

Nelson recognized the group prior to announcing individual conference awards, "It's a tough championship to receive and I know you guys have worked awfully hard…You've been a special group and something we'll remember forever."

Six team members received WIAC honors. Seniors Matt Kelley and Nate Engel, and juniors Brian Grand and Matt Elder were named first team all-conference, while seniors Ben Royce and Alex Young were awarded second team. Young was also named to the all-sportsmanship team and Kelley picked up his second honor by being named the WIAC co-defensive player of the year.

Not only did the players receive high recognitions, head coach Joe Mooney in his sixth season with the Yellowjackets was named WIAC coach of the year. In his time coaching at UW-Superior Mooney has led 14 players to All-WIAC status and one player to the WIAC all-time team during the conference's 100th anniversary. Prior to coaching the Yellowjackets, Mooney was a four-year letter winner for the UW-Superior men's soccer team, and three year captain from 2001-2005.

Upon being presented with the trophy, Mooney thanked his seniors for their leadership both on and off the field one last time and acknowledged this years' team has set high standards for UW-Superior men's soccer for years to come "If these guys do the job that we all know and think that they did this year, this won't be the only championship that we bring home."

Congratulations to the Yellowjacket men's soccer team on an outstanding season!
